One of the trickiest stages of learning how to read is when kids can read some sight words – but can’t manage longer books yet. So they are stuck with books about “the fat cat on the mat” and Bob Books – which aren’t always the most exciting.
You know what kids are interested in? Themselves. And their friends, pets and hobbies.
So I started making beginner books for my kids. It sounds complicated – but really it’s just few sentences in a Word doc (including the sight words they working on in school) and adding a few photos from my phone. In under five minutes, I had a custom book for my kids to read that they were really interested in.
Here is one from first grade – Jack was really into American Ninja Warrior that year.
How quick and easy is that? And it works! It is so much easier to get kids to read when they are interested in the book!
